Jack Hartog

Jack Hartog, the first layperson ever elected to the board of Unity Worldwide Ministries (serving from 2009 to 2016), championed “unity in Unity” as an overriding necessity for the Unity movement. Inspired by Jim Labrie, the first layperson to serve on the board, Jack lead efforts from 2012 to 2015 for UWM members to contribute an agreed assessment as a condition of membership in and credentialing by UWM, masterminding a detailed written explanation of the need for a fundamental reconsideration of the relationships among UWM members with UWM. His wise counsel on UWM bylaws and other legal concerns guided the board through many challenging issues.

Discovering Unity in the late 1990's, Jack met his wife, Johannys (now Rev. Johannys Jiménez-Hartog), at Unity on the Bay (UOTB) through its Chaplain Program, proposed to her during a chaplain’s meeting, married her at UOTB in a bilingual ceremony, and served UOTB’s board for four years, including as its vice president. Johannys and Jack in 2010 co-founded Misión Unity, a Spanish language Unity ministry near Miami, which has evolved into Unity’s first “virtual” ministry (available only online) called “Unity Para Todos” (www.unityparatodos.org). Jack says: “I am the lighthouse building that supports the lighthouse light, which is Rev. Johannys. Together we shine Unity teachings to the Spanish speaking world.”

A graduate of Cornell University and Stanford University School of Law, Jack worked for 13 years with the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in Washington D.C. before moving to Miami in 1986 to work for Miami-Dade County’s large public health system. He is now retired, working exclusively for Unity Para Todos.

Rita Marie Johnson

As an educator, author, and speaker, Rev. Rita Marie Johnson has been sharing her message of connection worldwide for over a decade. The Connection Practice methodology she developed has impacted more than 40,000 school children per year in Costa Rica (as SerPaz).

Johnson discovered that the synergy of connecting mind and heart, feelings and needs, and insight and empathy maximizes our social-emotional intelligence, builds resilience and enhances performance. The Connection Practice is now being used by individuals, schools, businesses, and organizations to enhance personal well-being, reduce conflicts and bullying, improve communication and collaboration, and boost performance. The fruits of this practice inspire hope in everyone it touches.

Her practice was awarded the Ashoka Changemakers Innovation Award, chosen from 79 projects in 32 countries. Rita Marie considers her book, Completely Connected: Uniting Our Empathy and Insight for Extraordinary Results as her greatest achievement since it received a Nautilus Award in the Psychology category.

“This practice that is so dear to my heart has helped me through lymphoma (twice), a divorce, the economic downturn that resulted in the elimination of funding for SerPaz training in schools, and the death of my father. It's also helped me to celebrate the day-to-day and major triumphs in my life. I am so very grateful for this wonderful, daily practice in my life.”

Johnson's vision is a world where every person practices the art of connection and passes this gift on to the next generation. Through the vivid examples she shares, she spells out exactly how that vision can be realized. She currently serves as CEO of Rasur Foundation International (RFI) and minister of Unity San Jose.
